Wilkes Softball Drop Sunday Matchups to Mary Baldwin and Waynesburg
MYRTLE BEACH - The Wilkes softball team dropped their season opening matches on Sunday, falling to Mary Baldwin and Waynesburg by just one run in each contest.
Game 1 | Wilkes 3, Mary Baldwin 4
The Colonels totaled eight hits in their first game of the day, with Paige Randazzo (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) and Evan Sherrick (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) recording doubles. Mary Baldwin opened the scoring in the first inning with a single to left field by McKenzie Til, scoring Allison Crum on an unearned run. Wilkes responded in the second inning with Randazzo's double which scored Olivia Dougher (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) to equalize the score.
Hadley May hit a home run for Mary Baldwin in the third inning, scoring Crum to add two runs and regain the lead. Wilkes responded with two runs in the fourth inning, Abby Cruz (Dallas, PA/Dallas) scored on an error by Mary Baldwin off a bunt by Hannah Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon) and Julia Kapitula (Mount Olive, NJ/Mount Olive) scored off of Sherrick's double to center field to tie the game up once again.
The game went to eight innings, with Mary Baldwin securing the win with Crum scoring the winning run off a ground out by Til.
Maddy Maloney (Scranton, PA/West Scranton), Randazzo, and Boyd each led the team in hits, each recording two. Mia Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) pitched the entire game for the Colonels, recording five strikeouts and a 1.83 earned run average.
Game 2 | Wilkes 2, Waynesburg 3
The Colonels dropped their lead over Waynesburg in the seventh inning, coming up one run short in their second game of the day. Dougher's single to center field got Wilkes on the board early, with Hana Cross (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) scoring on the play. The Colonels maintained their 1-0 lead until the sixth inning when Dilyn Roberts scored after Breanna Rice recorded a walk with the bases loaded.
Wilkes regained the lead later in the sixth inning after Allyson Stafursky (Eynon, PA/Valley View) singled to second base allowing Dana Messner (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) to reach home. Waynesburg tied the game in the seventh with a run by Mackenzie Kurns off a double to center field by Meysa Heitmann and took the lead with Heitmann scoring off a hit by Roberts.
Randazzo recorded two hits in this game for the Colonels and Cross had a walk. Lauren DeMarco (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) pitched all seven innings for Wilkes, recording four strikeouts for a 2.00 earned run average.
The Colonels will face Albion College for their next matchup on Monday, March 3 at 1 p.m. followed by Rosemnont at 3 p.m. in Myrtle Beach for their second day in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Break Classic.
