Wilkes Men's Lacrosse Defeats Mount Saint Mary 12-9

NEWBURGH, NY - The Wilkes men's lacrosse teams' second quarter comeback was enough momentum for the Colonels to maintain the lead for the remainder of the game on their way to a road win against the Knights. 

Tonight's victory leaves the Colonels sitting at 3-7 overall while Mount Saint Mary now sits at 2-6.

The Knights took an early lead, recording four goals in the first quarter of play. Wilkes scored two, one by Tim Hartka (Phoenix, MD/Calvert Hall), assisted by Cody Dembski (Agoura Hills, CA/Agoura) and the second scored by Austin Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) which came unassisted just before the quarter ended. The Colonels had a strong second quarter that propelled them into the lead for the remainder of the game. Matthew Rotolo (Long Island, NY/St. John the Baptist), Anthony DelDuca (Westchester, NY/Westlake) and Hartka added three goals for the Colonels while the Knights recorded none, sending them to a 5-4 lead going into the third quarter. A. Sosnovik and DelDuca picked up assists for the three goals in the second quarter.

Stone Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) recorded two goals in the third quarter and A. Sosnovik added one with an assist by DelDuca to give the Colonels a 8-4 lead. Mount Saint Mary added two goals to close out the third quarter to bring the Knights to six goals, still trailing Wilkes by two heading into the final quarter. 

The Knights added their seventh of the night to open the fourth quarter, cutting their goal deficit to just one. The Colonels responded with goals by DelDuca and Jackson Casper (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) before the Knights added another. Casper added the 11th goal with the Knights responding with their ninth. Oscar Cline (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) scored the final goal for Wilkes to close out the fourth quarter and the game with 12 total goals for the Colonels. A. Sosnovik, S. Sosnovik and Casper each tallied assists on the goals scored in the fourth quarter.

Wilkes out-shot Mount Saint Mary 41-34 and were nearly even with the Knights in shots on goal with 25 over the Knight's 24. Wilkes finished 15-18 on clearing attempts while Mount Saint Mary won 13 or 23 faceoffs. The Knights went 1-for-4 on extra man opportunities and Wilkes totaled 28 ground balls.

Caleb Miller (Mohrsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) finished with 15 saves in net for the Colonels. 

The Colonels are on the road for their next game against Juniata on Saturday, March 29. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
