Wilkes Softball Swept in Sunday Doubleheader at Misericordia
DALLAS, Pa. – The Wilkes University softball team had their five-game winning streak snapped on Sunday afternoon, as they were defeated by Misericordia University 8-3 and 11-2 at Anderson Field.
Wilkes falls to 9-6 overall, while Misericordia improves to 19-5.
Misericordia opened the scoring in the second inning, but Wilkes took the lead with two runs in the third.
Talia Piragas (Old Forge, PA/Old Forge) drove home
Hannah Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon) with an RBI double to left center, followed by a sacrifice fly by
Mia Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) to drive Piragas home and give the Colonels the 2-1 advantage.
The Cougars took the lead again in the fourth with three runs, making it a 4-2 ballgame.
Dana Messner's (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) single in the fifth inning cut the gap to just one as she brought
Abby Cruz (Dallas, PA/Dallas) in to score, but the Cougars added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the game 8-3.
Tessa Stafursky (Eynon, PA/Valley View) (0-1) was given the loss, pitching four innings allowing six hits, four runs (three earned), with five strikeouts. At the plate, five Colonels registered hits, with Piragas, Messner, and Butka picking up RBIs.
Sienna Lawson (5-1) picked up the win in the circle, with Kiersten Tinio leading the team at the plate going 2-4 with four RBIs.
In game two, the Cougars jumped out to an 11-0 lead by the second inning. The Colonels picked up runs in the fourth and fifth inning but fell by mercy rule after the fifth. Boyd scored her second run of the day in the fourth as
Allyson Stafursky (Eynon, PA/Valley View) was caught stealing, while
Maddy Maloney (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.
Bella Peters (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) (0-2) was credited with the loss for Wilkes, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing nine runs on six hits.
Lauren DeMarco (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) pitched the final two innings allowing no hits while picking up five strikeouts. Offensively, Boyd led the team going 2-2 at the plate with a walk and a run scored.
Morgan Kelly (2-1) earned the win pitching four innings, allowing one run on three hits. Casey Funesti and Kaitlyn Slusser led the offense with two hits each.
The Colonels return to action on Wednesday, April 2 as they travel to face the University of Scranton in a Landmark Conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
