Wilkes Baseball Sweeps Landmark Doubleheader at Moravian

Wilkes Baseball Sweeps Landmark Doubleheader at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Wilkes University baseball team completed the weekend sweep of Moravian University on Sunday afternoon at Gillespie Field, defeating the Greyhounds 26-1 in game one and 9-8 in game two.

Wilkes improves to 22-8 with the wins and 15-3 in Landmark play, while Moravian falls to 10-17 and 4-9 in conference play.

Wilkes opened the scoring in the top of the first, as Luke Spener doubled down the right field line, bringing two runners home. Matt Show brought in Spencer later in the inning to bring the Colonels lead to 3-0.

The blue and gold offense exploded in the second inning, driving in seven runs to increase the lead to 10-0. Spencer once again drove in two runs with a ground-rule double, and the Colonels scored two more with the bases loaded on a Chase Vrabel (Gibsonia, PA/Pine Richland) hit by pitch and a Gavin Lacoe (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) walk. Luke Kraszewski (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) then singled to right center to plate two more runs and take a double-digit advantage.

Moravian scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the second, but that didn't stop Wilkes from applying the pressure as they scored five more runs in the next two innings to take a 15-1 lead. Spencer punctuated the offensive firepower with yet another two-run play with a home run to left field in the top of the fourth inning.

Head coach Mike Guy then cleared the bench as the Colonels went on to score 11 more runs before drawing the mercy rule in the seventh inning 26-1. Spencer added another home run to his already dominant day, blasting a three-run home run into left center field to bring the lead up to 19-1 in the fifth.

Spencer finished the game perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two home runs and two doubles totaling nine RBIs, a single-game career high for the senior. Zack Luksic (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) (3-4) and Michael Sabella (Cornelius, NC/Hough) (2-4) were the other Colonels that registered multiple-hit performances. AJ Levandoski (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) pitched another dominant outing for Wilkes to move to 6-0 on the year, allowing one run on two hits with seven strikeouts through four innings.

Jack Steinel (0-2) took the loss for Moravian, pitching 1.2 innings allowing nine runs (seven earned) on four hits with one strikeout. Three Greyhounds registered hits at the plate.

The hosts rebounded with four runs to start game two, adding one more in the third to take a 5-1 lead. Wilkes responded with four runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at 5-5, thanks to two-run doubles from Jack Mathis (Exeter PA/Wyoming Area) and Luksic.

Moravian re-took the lead in the sixth with an RBI double of their own, but the Colonels pushed ahead for their first lead of the game in the eighth. Show's bunt single plated Trehnon Hugo (Wyalusing, PA/Wyalusing), and in the next at-bat Nathan Loch (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) scored Richie Rossi (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) on a sacrifice fly to make it 7-6 Colonels.

In the bottom of the eighth, Moravian re-took the lead with a two-run single to center field, going up 8-7. The Colonels wouldn't go down without a fight however, as Luksic opened the ninth inning with a solo home run to tie the game at 8-8 and forcing extra innings.

Loch scored the winning run in the tenth inning with a single to left field, giving the Colonels the 9-8 win.

Luksic and Loch led the team with two hits each, with the former registering a team-high three RBIs with a home run and a double. Shaun O'Donnell (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) (1-0) picked up his first career win pitching 2.1 innings without allowing a single hit while striking out two.

David Olsakowski led Moravian with three hits, while Tyler Bonelli (0-2) took the loss on the mound, giving up the winning run.

The Colonels return to Bruggeworth Field for a two-game homestand next week beginning with the University of Scranton on Tuesday, April 15. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
