Wilkes Softball Splits Mid-Week Conference Doubleheader at Juniata
HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Wilkes University softball team picked up one win in a mid-week doubleheader at Juniata College on Thursday afternoon, taking game one 6-3 but falling 8-5 in game two.
Wilkes finishes the day with a 12-12 overall record and a 7-5 record in Landmark play, while Juniata sits at 10-22 overall with a 2-8 conference record.
The Colonels opened the scoring in game one with four runs in the second inning.
Olivia Dougher (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) reached home on a wild pitch to plate the first run, followed by
Allyson Stafursky's (Eynon, PA/Valley View) single to third base that doubled the lead.
Hannah Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon) then stole home to increase the lead to 3-0.
Talia Piragas (Old Forge, PA/Old Forge) completed the inning with a single to right field to give Wilkes the 4-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the frame, Juniata hit a solo home run to get on the board. Wilkes restored the four-run lead on a Piragas sacrifice fly in the fourth, with the Eagles once again responding in their half of the inning this time with a double to right center to make it a 5-2 game.
Dougher rounded out the Colonels scoring with a solo home run in the fifth inning, and Wilkes took the victory 6-3 after another Juniata run scored in the seventh.
Lauren DeMarco (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) (7-2) picked up the win, allowing three runs on seven hits in a complete-game effort with five strikeouts. Stafursky led the Colonels with three hits, while Piragas and Dougher each had two. Piragas led the Colonels with two RBIs.
Isabella Countryman (1-6) was given the loss pitching 1.2 innings and allowing four runs. Morgan Brumbaugh led the Eagles with two hits and two RBIs, including a home run.
The Colonels continued their momentum into game two, as
Mia Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) crushed a home run to take the early lead. Wilkes added four more in the fourth, as Piragas scored Boyd with an RBI single, followed by A. Stafursky stealing home much like game one. Butka finished off the inning with her second home run of the game, this time a two-run shot to give Wilkes the 5-0 lead.
Juniata matched Wilkes in their half of the fourth with four runs of their own, and four more unanswered runs in the sixth to take the victory.
Butka (3-6) took the loss in the circle pitching 4.1 innings allowing eight runs (three earned) on ten hits. She also led Wilkes at the plate as one of four players with two-hit games, and three RBIs on her two home runs.
Rylea Lynch (1-4) was the winning pitcher for Juniata, pitching five innings allowing just three hits. Jessie Hunt led the Eagles at the plate going 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
The Colonels return to action on the other side of the easter break, as they host cross-town rival King's College for a doubleheader at the Ralston Athletic Complex on Wednesday, April 23. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
