SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Wilkes University softball team took to the road Saturday afternoon, splitting their doubleheader at Susquehanna University's Sassafras Field in Landmark Conference play. Wilkes took game one 6-3 but fell in game two 6-4.

Wilkes ends the day with a 14-14 overall record and an 8-6 record in conference play, while Susquehanna leaves 13-18 overall with a 9-5 Landmark record.

The Colonels opened the scoring in game one as Talia Piragas (Old Forge, PA/Old Forge) reached on an error, allowing Mia Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) to cross the plate. The River Hawks responded in the third inning on an RBI single, tying the game again at one.

In the fourth inning, Hannah Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon) gave the Colonels the lead again with a single to center field that drove home two runs. In the next at-bat, Ally Stafursky scored Boyd with a double to right center that gave Wilkes a 4-1 lead.

A sacrifice fly by Piragas in the fifth extended the lead to 5-1, with Susquehanna putting up their second run of the day in the sixth with a sacrifice fly of their own to make it a 5-2 game.

Kayla Burleson (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) gave the Colonels the final insurance run of the day in the seventh with a double to left center field, weathering a River Hawk solo home run in their half of the inning to take the 6-3 win.

Butka (5-6) pitched a complete game allowing three runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. She also led the team at the plate going 2-4 with two doubles. Olivia Dougher (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) also had a multi-hit game, while Boyd led the team with two RBIs.

Brianna Jones (9-4) took the loss for the River Hawks pitching a complete game as well, allowing six runs (two earned) on eight hits. She too led the team's offense going 2-4 with one RBI.

Wilkes opened the scoring in game two as well, with Burleson reaching on an error that scored Hana Cross (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick). Piragas then reached base on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat, doubling the lead to 2-0 as she drove home Butka. The Colonels tallied two more in the fifth on a Cross triple and a Butka single to take a 4-0 lead, but the hosts then rallied to take the lead in their half of the inning with five runs of their own.

After adding one more in the sixth inning, the River Hawks took game two 6-4.

Lauren DeMarco (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) (7-3) was given the decision pitching 4.2 innings allowing five runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Five Colonels registered hits with Cross, Butka, and Piragas registering RBIs.

Amanda Amerman (3-3) picked up the win pitching the final three innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits. Katelyn Dugery led the team going 3-4 at the plate.

Wilkes returns to action on Saturday, May 3 as they close the regular season with a Landmark doubleheader at Elizabethtown College. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
