Wilkes Softball Splits Conference Doubleheader With Lycoming

EDWARDSVILLE, PA - The Wilkes women's softball team split their midweek meeting with the Warriors on Wednesday, with Lycoming taking game one and the Colonels taking game two.
 

Game 1 | Wilkes 0, Lycoming 2 (10 Innings)

After a scoreless seven innings, game one went into extra innings and remained scoreless until the 10th. 

It was an even game between the Warriors and the Colonels, but Lycoming pulled away the victory in the 10th innings after beginning the inning with a runner on second. A single up the middle allowed Kristen George to advance to third before reaching home on a sacrifice fly to get Lycoming on the board. Jocelyn McCracken recorded the second run for the Warriors after a single to right field to give the Warriors a 2-0 and leaving the Colonels the bottom of the 10th to respond. 

Kayla Burleson (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) was placed on second to begin the bottom of the 10th, but the Colonels were unable to record any hits to close out the game.

In the circle, Mia Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) pitched a complete 10 innings and recorded six strikeouts. 

 

Game 2 | Wilkes 4, Lycoming 0

The Colonels came back in the second game, scoring four unanswered runs against the Warriors. Talia Piragas (Old Forge, PA/Old Forge) recorded the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning off a sacrifice fly by Burleson to give the Colonels an early lead.

In the second inning, Hannah Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon) scored on a sacrifice fly by Maddy Maloney (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) and Allyson Stafursky (Eynon, PA/Valley View) scored after an error by the catcher to get Wilkes up 3-0 going into the third inning. 

The final run of the game was a home run by Butka in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure the Colonels victory. 

In the circle, Lauren DeMarco (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) pitched a complete seven innings and recorded five strikeouts while allowing no runs and four hits throughout the game.  

The Colonels will be back home on Saturday, April 12, to face Moravian. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
