WILKES-BARRE - The Wilkes University field hockey team defeated the McDaniel College Green Terror 3-2 in an overtime thriller Saturday afternoon, behind Maddie Karp's (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) game-winning goal.
The Colonels now sit at 4-1 on the season, surpassing their win total from 2024.
The Colonels took control of the game early in the first quarter, when Karp scored her first goal of the game at 4:27 off an assist from Taylor Bower (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg). Wilkes held that 1-0 lead going into the second, and continued to put the pressure on McDaniel's defense.
The Colonels took eight shots in the quarter, and found the back of the cage for a second time. Bower scored her first collegiate goal at 20:06 to make it 2-0 Wilkes, set up by a Lydia Keppel (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) assist. However, the Green Terror fought back with a goal from Kelsey Jennings on a penalty corner at 25:57 to cut the deficit in half just before the break.
McDaniel kept their momentum in the third quarter as they outshot the Colonels 5-2. Despite that, the score remained 2-1 Wilkes until the final two minutes, when Jennings struck again for the Green Terror with her second goal of the game to tie it up going into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was a defensive stalemate for both teams, combining for just three shots in the quarter and just one penalty corner overall. That brought the game into overtime where the Colonels took control for good. Wilkes took all four shots in overtime and had five penalty corners. On the fifth penalty corner, Karp finished the job with her second goal of the game to give the Colonels the 3-2 win.
Karp led the Colonels in goals with two and shots on goal with three. Bower finished the game with a goal and an assist, and Courtney Keim and Olivia Gayoski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) each finished with a defensive save. In goal, Chloe Gilroy (Manchester, NH/Pace University) made five saves and got the win for the navy and gold.
The Colonels finish up their five-game homestand with Senior Day tomorrow at 1 p.m. against the DeSales University Bulldogs.
