Wilkes Men's Soccer Plays to Dramatic Draw with King's College
EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – A late rebound goal from junior
Grant Gerstner (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley High School) helped the Wilkes men's soccer team to a thrilling 1-1 draw against King's College Tuesday night at Bruggeworth Field.
Wilkes left the pitch with a 1-3-2 record overall, while King's moved to 2-2-2 on the season.
The teams remained evenly matched through the first 45 minutes, with the Colonels' best chance coming off a
Nick Romas (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) header that was just over the crossbar. Wilkes out-shot the visitors 4-3 in the first half of play.
Both squads came out swinging in the second half forcing both goaltenders into action. King's broke the deadlock in the 70
th minute as Evan Corcoran rifled a shot from outside the box past
Matthew Conti (Florence, NJ/Florence Township Memorial High School) to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
The Colonels continued to produce chances late but narrowly missed out on goal. In the 84
th minute,
Luke Ferrarese (Bel Air, MD/Calvert Hall College) fired a shot into the back of the net that was then called off due to a push in the box. Four minutes later, the Colonels were awarded a penalty with Gerstner stepping up to take the spot kick. The initial strike was saved by Monarch net minder Ben Van Valkenburg, but he couldn't keep the rebound from Gerstner who neatly equalized.
A scrappy final two minutes ensued before the final whistle blew, the game ending a 1-1 draw.
Ferrarese led Wilkes with three shots total, with Gerstner leading with two on goal. Wilkes outshot King's 14-10 with each team putting four on goal. In goal, Conti made three saves for the blue and gold.
Philip Permyashkin was the Monarch's top attacker with two shots on goal, while Van Valkenburg made three saves of his own.
The Colonels return to action Saturday, September 20 as they travel to face Hood College at 1:00 p.m.
