Strong Defense Powers Wilkes Women's Soccer to Road Win Over Albright

READING - The Wilkes University women's soccer team defeated the Albright College Lions 2-0 on Wednesday night at Gene L. Shirk Stadium.

With the win the Colonels improve to 3-2-1 on the season, while the Lions drop to 0-4-2.

Wilkes dominated the entire game, but the first half set the tone for what was to come. The Colonels outshot the Lions 8-1 in the half, including 5-0 in shots on goal, and had three corner kicks to Albright's two.

The Colonels first shot of the game was missed wide right, but seconds later Sarah Straup's (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) shot from just outside the penalty area found the back of the net at 11:57 to give the Colonels the early lead. Wilkes had more opportunities to add to the lead, but Albright goalkeeper Paisley Tornatore made four saves to keep it a one-goal game at halftime.

On defense is where the Colonels truly shined. They followed up a strong first half with an equally strong second half. Albright didn't take a shot in the second half until the 62nd minute, and didn't get a shot on goal until the 86th minute. Offensively, the Colonels took another eight shots, but two hit the post and another three were saved by Tornatore.

It wasn't until the 70th minute when Wilkes got their second goal. Elena Krajain (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) found Erin Edwards (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) in the center of the penalty area, and the junior's shot to the high right corner went in the net to all but seal the 2-0 win for the Colonels.

It was a complete team win for the Colonels as they outshot Albright 16-4 overall, 9-1 in shots on goal, and earned four corner kicks. Straup and Edwards each scored one goal, while Krajain had the team's lone assist. Although without a goal, Abby Bolz (Fair Hill, MD/Rising Sun) led the Colonels in shots taken with five, while Straup was just behind her with four. It was a quiet game for Ava Long (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) in net, making just one save, but she got the win.

The Colonels return to Bruggeworth Field for a match against the FDU-Florham Devils on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 5 p.m.
