WILKES-BARRE - The Wilkes University women's volleyball team fell to the Marywood University Pacers 3-0 (19-25, 13-25, and 15-25) Tuesday night at the Marts Center.
The Colonels drop to 10-7 on the season, while the Pacers improve to 15-1.
After dropping the first point, Marywood scored the next six points in set one to take an early 6-1 lead. However, the Colonels fought back to make it 9-8 Pacers at one point, and even took a 13-12 lead with Ally Sheridan (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) and Abby Dornblaser (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) leading the way. The Pacers then responded with a 10-4 run to take back the lead 22-17, and held on for the 25-19 win in set one.
Both teams went back and forth early on in set two with Marywood holding on to a slight lead 10-8. After this they went on a 10-2 run to take complete control of the set with a 20-10 lead, and finished off the Colonels 25-13 to take a 2-0 set lead.
Set three was similar to set two with the Pacers leading 8-7 early and then going on a huge run. This time it was an 11-3 run to put Marywood up 19-10. Although the Colonels responded with a 5-2 run to make it closer, the Pacers scored the final four points of the set to seal the win 25-15 and complete the sweep.
Marywood finished with a much higher .245 attack percentage compared to a -.019 attack percentage for Wilkes. The Pacers also committed just 13 errors, while the Colonels committed 20 errors.
Individually, Dornblaser led the Colonels with five kills, with Sheridan and Mia Leon (Ponce, PR/Caribbean) right behind her with four each. Rachael Anderson (Canmore, AB/West Island College) led the team in assists with 14, and the trio of Annalyse Santowasso (Middlesex, NJ/Rutgers Prep), Kendra Kalp (Somerset, PA/Rockwood), and Allyson Gates (Margate, FL/Coral Springs Charter) led the team in digs with nine.
The Colonels start Landmark Conference play this Friday, Oct. 3 on the road against Goucher College. The match begins at 7 p.m.
