Wilkes Women's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match with Delaware Valley University and John Jay College
WILKES-BARRE – In the second tri-match of the year, the Wilkes University women's volleyball team split with Delaware Valley University and John Jay College defeating the Bloodhounds 3-0 and getting bested by the Aggies 1-3.
At the end of the day, the Colonels moved to an overall record of 3-2.
Game 1: vs. Delaware Valley
The Colonels started the day facing the Delaware Valley Aggies, where they started evenly going point-for-point until the Aggies went on a 4-0 run to make the score 7-3. Although the Colonels' fought hard, the Aggies were able to keep the lead and ended the first set 25-18.
The Colonels came out strong the second set with a service ace from Rachael Anderson (Canmore, AB/West Island College) and continued their attack throughout the set never losing their lead as Allyson Gates (Margate, FL/Coral Springs Charter) finished the set (25-23) with a kill.
Excitement continued into the third set as Wilkes rose to an early 2-0 lead, but it wasn't held long as the Aggies fought back. It was a back and forth game until the Aggies went on a 3-0 run, making it 18-13 with Wilkes unable to answer. Wilkes ended the third set 18-25.
The Aggies took the lead in the fourth set with a kill from Cassandra Gloster, but the Colonels stayed close with kills from Mia Leon (Ponce, PR/Caribbean) and Abby Dornblaser (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown). The Aggies sealed their win with a 7-0 run late in the game to finalize their win the Colonels 25-19
Ava Wahlers (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) led the Colonel's offense with 10 kills, Gates followed closely behind with 9 kills and led the team in aces (2) and digs (16).
Game 2: vs. John Jay
The Colonels started their second game of the day with an early 4-0 lead over the Bloodhounds in the first set. The Colonels lost the lead momentarily, but with kills from Ava Wahlers (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) and Ally Sheridan (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) Wilkes was able to gain the lead and fight to win the set 25-20.
John Jay responded in the second set with two long runs that helped them take a 23-14 advantage. Wilkes fought back with a seven unanswered points, highlighted by three aces from Leon to make it a 23-21 game. The Bloodhounds scored one to get within a set win, but five more unanswered points from the Colonels sealed the set win 26-24.
John Jay opened set three with a 10-5 advantage, before the Colonels went on a 7-1 run to take the set lead 12-11. From there, Wilkes pulled away to a 25-17 set victory outscoring the Bloodhounds 13-6.
Sheridan led the Colonels with 7 kills and 8 digs. Anderson led the team in assists with 18.
The Colonels return to the Marts Center on Tuesday, September 9th, as they host Penn State Hazleton at 7:00 p.m.
