Wilkes Men's Hockey Records Tie, Shootout Win Against Arcadia
GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team was back in action on Saturday afternoon against Arcadia University from the Hatfield Ice Center, tying with the Knights 2-2 in conference play, then later recording a shootout win.
With the tie, the Colonels' record moves to 8-8-3 (5-3-2), while Arcadia shifts to 6-6-3 (3-5-3) in the 2025-26 campaign.
The first period saw both the Colonels and Knights trade great goal-scoring opportunities, but alas, the two sides remained deadlocked going into the first intermission. Shots after the first period of play were 11-8 in favor of Arcadia.
Wilkes took a 1-0 lead just over six minutes into the middle period when
Jack Lee (Naperville, IL) scored his third goal in two games to propel the Colonels into the lead, off of assists from
Ryan Dann (Windham, NH) and
Caiden Mech (San Clemente, CA). Arcadia responded with the equalizer at 14:55 into the second period when Matthew Verspeeten found twine to send the game into the third period tied at a goal apiece.
Arcadia's power play unit lit the lamp just 23 seconds into the final frame when Russ Tecesco found the back of the net to make it a 2-1 contest. From there the Colonels pushed for a late equalizer, and their efforts were rewarded when
Nate Terski (North Grafton, MA/) scored to tie things up for the visitors at 15:45, with
Liam O'Donoghue (Canonsburg, PA) and
Matt Carlson (Delmar, NY/) providing the helpers.
The two sides went to overtime, which proved nothing as the two sides remained even at two, finishing in a 2-2 tie. The Colonels then went on to win in the shootout, grabbing the extra point.
For Wilkes,
Jeffrey Fillion (Chicoutimi, QC) recorded 23 saves in the tie, with Christian Blomqvist leading the team with seven shots. Meanwhile for Arcadia, Hayden Williamson made 37 stops, with Matthew Verspeeten and Christ Benkovitz each recording four shots on goal, leading the Knights in that category.
The Colonels return to home ice next Friday, Jan. 16 when they take on Neumann University in the first game of a two-in-two. Puck drop against the Knights is slated for 4:50 p.m. from the Toyota Sportsplex.
