WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's ice hockey team were back in action on Saturday afternoon, defending home ice for the first time in over a month as they took on Arcadia University, winning in comeback fashion in overtime, 3-2.
Propelled by a two-goal performance from
Renee Ng (Hong Kong, China/Mount Academy), the Colonels improved their record to 10-1-1 (8-1-0). Arcadia fell to 8-3-2 (6-2-1).
After a back and forth first 10 minutes of play to begin the opening period, Arcadia took the lead as Phoebe Roberts scored her first of two tallies on the day. The Colonels had a few good scoring opportunities, but the game remained 1-0 going into the first intermission.
Back and forth was the name of the game in the second period as both sides traded blow for blow in scoring opportunities. The Colonels had the shot advantage in the period, however the score stayed the same entering the third period.
Arcadia doubled their lead early on in the third frame at 1:22, when Roberts found twine for the second time of the evening to make it a 2-0 contest. The Colonels answered back when
Nina Hudakova (Košice, Slovakia/Hoosac Prep School) gave the home side life.
Anneke Bouma (Newcastle, ON/) provided the assist on the play that put the Colonels back into the contest.
As the rest of the third period went on, the Colonels continued to look for the tying goal. With the goaltender pulled, and less than a minute left on the clock,
Renee Ng (Hong Kong, China/Mount Academy) tied things up to send the game to overtime.
Megan Bell (Waterloo, ON/St. David Catholic) provided the helper on the play.
The Colonels carried their momentum into overtime, when Ng scored her second goal of the game, completing the comeback and securing victory for Wilkes at 3:38 into the overtime period.
Carrying the momentum into the overtime period, Wilkes completed the comeback when Ng scored for the second time, securing a hard-fought victory.
Jordan Ferry (Bohemia, NY/) provided the game-winning assist.
In goal for the Colonels,
Audrey Milne (London, ON) recorded 31 saves en route to the overtime victory. Ng led the team in shots with seven in addition to her tallies. Hudakova also recorded six shots on goal.
Abby Bush (Ottawa, ON) won 14 out of 22 faceoffs, leading the team.
For Arcadia, Gabby Meger made 39 saves in the loss. Carys Jelley and Chloe Makinson each recorded six shots on goal, sharing the team lead for the contest.
The Colonels return to action tomorrow, Jan. 11 for the second game of the two game set against Arcadia. Puck drop against the Knights is slated for 3:30 p.m. from the Toyota Sportsplex
