Wilkes Women's Basketball Bested by Rangers at Home
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's basketball team hosted Landmark Conference action at the Marts Center Wednesday evening, falling to the Rangers of Drew University 72-44.
Wilkes falls to 3-11 on the year and are still in search of their first conference win of the season. Drew improves to 9-6 on the season and 4-3 in Landmark play.
Wilkes took early control in the first quarter with buckets from
Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville),
Carolyn Lundy (Fair Haven, NJ/St. John Vianney), and
Anya Richet (Plymouth, PA/Wyoming Valley West) giving the Colonels the 7-2 advantage halfway through the period. The visitors responded over the next four minutes with a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the day up 12-7.
Aivry Devoy (Milton, MA/Archbishop Williams) brought the Colonels back within a possession with a corner three, but the Rangers held the advantage into the break 16-12.
The Navy and Gold struggled to find the basket early in the second as they were held scoreless for the first four minutes. Wilkes took momentum into the break with five points in the final minute, including a
Reagan Holden (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Wilkes-Barre Area) triple that saw the Colonels go into the break down 35-24.
Delaney Moyer (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) led Wilkes with five points in the quarter, including three from the stripe.
Both teams had their best scoring quarters in the third, but Wilkes was unable to close the gap in the second half as they fell to the Rangers 72-44.
Richet led the Colonels off the bench with 13 points and shared the team high in rebounds with Warren and Holden who all snagged six boards. Warren,
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee), and
Charlotte Taylor (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) shared a team-high two assists.
Maddie Beyer led the Rangers with 14 points, while Brenna Hezel led all players with 10 rebounds. Jocelyn Kingsley was the team's key distributor, tallying four assists.
Wilkes returns to action on Saturday, January 17
th as they travel to Goucher College to face the Gophers at 4:00 p.m.
