READING, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's ice hockey team took to the ice for the second leg of their weekend two-in-two against Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon. Powered by
Renee Ng's (Hong Kong, China/Mount Academy) first career hat trick and a three-point performance from
Megan Bell (Waterloo, ON/St. David Catholic), the Colonels left Reading with an 8-1 win and a weekend sweep of the Golden Wolves.
The Colonels clinched their 11th-straight win in Middle Atlantic Conference play, improving to 15-1-1 (13-1-0 MAC). Alvernia fell to 8-8-0 (7-7-0 MAC) following the defeat.
The Golden Wolves drew first blood when Alexis Oliveira gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at 10:36 into the first period.
It only took the Colonels five minutes before they equalized.
Drew Hayhurst (Breckenridge, CO/New Hampton School) scored the tying goal, with Bell notching her first point of the game. The two teams went into the first intermission tied at a goal apiece. However, a five-goal second period would commence for the Colonels.
Abby Bush (Ottawa, ON) scored just 40 seconds into the middle period. A minute-and-a-half later,
Delaney Howard (Pittsburgh, PA) found twine to give the Colonels a 3-1 lead.
Gianna Pacilio (Franklinville, NJ/) lit the lamp at 11:12 to make it a 4-1 game. After that, it was Ng that would make her mark, scoring her first of three goals at 14:26 into the second period. Ng then scored once more at 18:40 into the period to make it a 6-1 contest in favor of the visitors heading into the second intermission.
Ng clinched the hat trick at 9:25 into the third period, with
Hannah Franz (North Bay, ON/) and Pacilio assisting. At 12:57,
Haylee Bouchard (Sioux Lookout, ON/) scored with Bell and Aneeke Bouma providing the helpers.
When all was said and done, the Colonels ended with eight unanswered goals, continuing their reign atop of the standings in conference play.
Between the pipes for Wilkes,
Emily Connell (Berwick, NS) made 24 saves in the victory. Franz finished with two points, while Hayhurst led the Colonels with six shots on goal.
For Alvernia, Stephanie Skorupa recorded 42 saves in the loss. Oliveira led the Golden Wolves with five shots.
The Colonels return to play next Friday, Jan 30 with an away contest against Lebanon Valley. Puck drop against the Dutchmen is set for 5 p.m. from Hersheypark Arena.
