Wilkes Women's Basketball Falls in Close Conference Contest to Lycoming College

WILKES-BARRE- The Wilkes University women's basketball team hosted the Warriors of Lycoming College at the Marts Center Wednesday night, falling 65-58 in a Landmark Conference clash.

The Colonels fall to 4-14 overall and 1-10 in Landmark play, while the Warriors improve to 7-11 on the year and 2-8 against conference opponents.

Both teams started the game hot from beyond the arc, hitting a combined eight three pointers in the first quarter with the last four shots made by either team coming from three-point territory. The scoreboard at the end of the quarter matched the even shooting, tied at 18 after ten minutes.

After another evenly matched quarter in the second, Wilkes pulled away late thanks to a Matos made free-throw and an Aivry Devoy (Milton, MA/Archbishop Williams) three to take a 29-25 lead into halftime.

The Marts Center erupted as Wilkes opened the second half with a 7-4 scoring run fueled by six points from Delaney Moyer (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) to increase their lead to 36-29. Momentum swung back in favor of the Warriors with a 7-0 run to tie the game once again at 36 with under six minutes left to play in the third. After matching each other shot for shot down the stretch, Lycoming took the lead on a trey with less than a minute left to go into the fourth up 45-42 and added a free throw before the fourth quarter.

Lycoming opened the fourth on a 9-2 run to make it a 58-44 game, and despite a valiant effort from the Colonels, held on to take the 65-58 victory.

Delaney Bogdan (Long Valley, NJ/Mendham) led Wilkes with nine points off the bench, followed by Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) and Charlotte Taylor (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) with eight each. Matos had a team-high five assists on the night while Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) led the team with six rebounds.

Allison Fisher led Lycoming with 18 points, all of which came from beyond the arc. Ann-Marie McMurtrie led all players with 13 rebounds, while three players shared a team-best three assists.

Wilkes returns to action on Saturday, January 31st as they host Catholic University at the Marts Center. Tip off against the Cardinals is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
