Matos Hits 1,000-Point Mark in Close 61-57 Defeat at Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, PA – Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) scored a team-high 16 points including the 1,000th point of her career in the Colonels 61-57 defeat at Eastern University Saturday night in non-conference women's basketball action.

Wilkes dropped to 3-8 overall while Eastern improved to 5-6 on the season following the home victory.

Eastern jumped out to a 9-2 lead mid-way through the first quarter only to see the Colonels respond with five straight points thanks to a bucket from Anya Richet (Plymouth, PA/Wyoming Valley West) and three-pointer from Carolyn Lundy (Fair Haven, NJ/St. John Vianney). Two free throws from Matos tied the game at nine and a layup from Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) gave the Colonels their first lead at 11-10 with 2:24 left in the opening stanza. Matos then became the 14th player in program history to reach the 1000-point mark when she canned two free throws with 1:58 on the clock giving Wilkes a 13-10 advantage. Aivry Devoy (Milton, MA/Archbishop Williams) capped off the Wilkes scoring with an inside score to give the Colonels a 15-13 lead after one frame.

Eastern outscored Wilkes 16-10 over the second ten minutes of play to take a slim 28-25 lead to the break. The Eagles continued the momentum into the third stanza building their lead to 12 points at 29-27 with 7:16 on the clock.

From there a 13-0 run over the final seven minutes put the Colonels ahead 40-39. Matos scored six of her team-high 16 over the stretch with Lundy drilling another trey and Robel finishing off the flurry with a free throw to give Wilkes a one point lead heading into the final frame.

The teams traded baskets over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter before Adriana Summersett notched back-to-back buckets including a three-pointer to give Eastern a 50-43 lead with 4:25 left. Wilkes cut the advantage to six twice in the final minute before a Matos layup and three-pointer from Devoy made it 59-57 Eagles with just nine seconds on the clock. Eastern sealed the win when Wilkes was forced to foul on the next possession making both free throws to earn the four-point victory.

Matos became the first Colonel to reach the century mark since 2015 while also adding 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) added 10 points and nine rebounds while Robel (9) and Lundy (8) chipped in offensively for the Colonels.

Summersett topped Eastern with a game-high 21 points and six rebounds while Jeriyah Johnson followed with 15 points and four boards.

Wilkes is back in league action on Wednesday when the Colonels host Juniata College for a Landmark Conference matchup at 6:00 p.m.
