Wilkes Men's Soccer Bested by No. 10 Catholic
EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Wilkes University men's soccer team were defeated by the No. 10-ranked Catholic University Cardinals at Bruggeworth Field Saturday afternoon, falling 5-0 to the undefeated outfit.
Wilkes falls to 0-8-2 on the year and 0-3-1 in Landmark play, while Catholic improves to 9-0-3 overall and 3-0-1 against conference opponents.
The Cardinals scored first in the 19
th minute, as Christian Backich turned home the pass from Carson Shamoo to go up 1-0. Just before half time, the visitors doubled the lead to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
Wilkes had all three of their shots in the second half but were unable to find the back of the net as the Cardinals added three more goals to take the 5-0 win.
Athanasios Valasis (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) had the lone shot on goal for Wilkes, while
Matthew Conti (Florence, NJ/Florence Township Memorial High School) made nine saves between the sticks.
Five different players scored for the visitors, while Shamoo tallied two assists and had five shots. Three different players put multiple shots on goal. In net, Owen Allegro made one save and kept a clean sheet.
Wilkes returns to Bruggeworth Field on Wednesday, October 14 for a 7:00 p.m. clash with Drew University.
