Wilkes Women's Soccer Bested by Catholic in Landmark Conference Clash

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's soccer team hosted Catholic University at Schmidt Stadium on Saturday evening, falling to the Cardinals 2-0 in a hard-fought contest.

Wilkes falls to 8-5 overall with a 2-2 record in Landmark play, while Catholic improves to 8-3-1 and 4-0 in conference play.

The Colonel defense withstood an onslaught from the Catholic attack in the first half, with junior netminder Delaney Yaracs (Butler, PA/Butler) making six saves in the first 45 minutes to keep the contest scoreless at half time.

In the 55th minute, an unfortunate deflection off the glove of Yaracs allowed a long shot by Reagan O'Mara to trickle into the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals doubled their lead in the 62nd minute as Caroline Aponte headed home a cross from close range.

Wilkes had a late chance denied by a foul in the box, and were unable to find the back of the net again as they fell 2-0 at the full-time whistle.

Ava Young (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) led Wilkes with two shots and one on goal, with Abby Bolz (Fair Hill, MD/Rising Sun) and Hannah Dennison (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) also putting shots on net. Yaracs made a season-high 10 saves on the day between the sticks.

Aponte led the Cardinals with seven total shots, while O'Mara led all players with three on goal. In goal, Lauren Creamer made three saves and earned a clean sheet.

The Colonels kick off a two-game road trip for their next contest on Wednesday, October 14, as they travel to face Drew University at 7:00 p.m.
