Match 1: Wilkes 3, Catholic 2 The opening match of the day was a pivotal one, featuring two teams both looking to reach .500 in Landmark Conference play. Catholic raced out to a quick 5–0, forcing the Colonels to call an early timeout. The Colonels responded by scoring six of the seven points to even the score at six, then five straight points by Wilkes shortly after opening up a 12–8 Colonels lead. A trio of Cardinals attacking errors extended the Colonels' lead to 22–13. The Cardinals rallied to cut the lead to 24–21, but a service error clinched the first set for the navy and gold. The Colonels' momentum carried into the second, with another five-point run to take an early 8–5 lead. Wilkes steadily built a 15–8 lead, powered by four kills from Abby Dornblaser (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown). The Colonels prevented a Catholic rally and built a 2–0 match lead with a 25–15 set victory. Wilkes landed 15 kills on 30 swings, with just four errors in the second set. Catholic refused to go away, using a nine-point rally to win the third set 25–13 and then pulling away to win the fourth set 25–15. The start of the fifth set was intense, with emotions running high for both sides and neither team was able to pull ahead at 6–6. The match decider came at the hands of a crucial 8–0 Wilkes rally, highlighted by a trio of Mia Leon (Ponce, PR/Caribbean) kills and two more from Kendra Kelp, giving the Colonels a 14–6 lead and a match-point opportunity. Catholic went on to score two more points, but another Cardinal service error sealed the deal for Wilkes by a 15–8 margin in the fifth set. The win improved the Colonels to 2–2 in Landmark play and 12–8 on the season, while Catholic dropped to 5–14 and 1–3 in conference play. Kalp and Leon led Wilkes with 14 kills, while Dornblaser added 11. Emilee Atherholt (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) finished with five blocks, one shy of her career-high, and Annalyse Santowasso (Middlesex, NJ/Rutgers Prep) recorded a season-high 24 digs. Match 2: Wilkes 3, Hunter 0 The Colonels closed out the day with a non-conference battle against Hunter College. Similar to the first match, the visitors raced out to an early 12–6 lead, before Wilkes flipped the match with a 12-point rally, its longest of the season. Over the run, Wilkes landed eight kills, five from Leon and three from Dornblaser. The rally moved the Colonels from down six to up six, now leading 18–12. Hunter pulled with 20–17, but a five-point rally earned Wilkes the first set, 25–17. The Colonels built yet another big run to start the second set, this time rallying off six straight points to take an early 9–3 lead. Both teams traded points before a 7–1 Wilkes run opened the Colonels' lead to 23–12, as Wilkes coasted to a 25–14 set victory. Another Colonels' rally, this time nine straight points, gave Wilkes a 9–2 lead to start the third set. Leon landed a trio of kills, while Dornblaser served an ace. The Colonels continued the hot start, using two more five-point rallies to build a 22–8 lead. Hunter trimmed into the deficit, scoring eight of the next ten points, but a Hawks service error capped off a 2–0 day for the Colonels. Leon led Wilkes with 20 kills, while Dornblaser pitched in seven. The Colonels served eight aces, led by Ava Wahlers (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) with three. Defensively, Kalp had 16 digs, and Santowasso had 11. Wilkes heads to Bethlehem for a Landmark Conference matchup at Moravian College on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7:00 p.m. Print Friendly Version
