Wilkes Men's Soccer Falls in Mid-Week Clash with Drew

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Wilkes University men's soccer team continued their push through Landmark Conference competition Wednesday night, falling to the visiting Drew University Rangers 2-0 at Bruggeworth Field.

Wilkes falls to 0-9-2 on the year with an 0-4-1 mark in conference play, while Drew improves to 7-3-3 with a 3-2-0 mark against Landmark opposition.

Wilkes got the first major chance of the game, as Giovanni Mazzola (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall High School) broke away less than ten minutes into the game but just missed the shot wide left. The Colonels had another strong chance with just over 15 minutes to play in the first half, as Charles Floyd (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) put a header on goal that was saved by Drew goaltender Donovan Freidhoff.

The Rangers drew a penalty with just five minutes left in the half but were denied by Matthew Conti's (Florence, NJ/Florence Township Memorial High School) crucial save on the initial shot and rebound to keep the visitors off the board. Despite those chances, a hard-fought first 45 minutes by both sides saw no score heading into halftime.

The game remained scoreless to open the second with both teams finding early chances, but the visitors opened the scoring in the 68th minute as Matt Munoz put the Rangers ahead 1-0. A second goal in the 85th minute then sealed the 2-0 victory for the visitors.

Floyd and Ayden Hannigan (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) registered the Colonels' two shots on goal, while Conti made eight saves between the sticks for the navy and gold.

Turkcan Curak led the Rangers with six total shots, while Munoz put all three of his shots on goal. Freidhoff made two saves and kept the clean sheet in goal.

Wilkes now hits the road for their final two road contests of the season, beginning at Goucher College on Saturday, October 17 at 1:00 p.m.
