Wilkes Women's Volleyball Ends Four-Game Skid with Win at Lackawanna
SCRANTON, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team returned to the win column Wednesday night as they concluded their non-conference schedule with a five-set win over Lackawanna College.
Wilkes improves to 14-12 on the year, while Lackawanna falls to 0-15.
After falling in the first set 25-23, Wilkes flipped the score in the second set to tie the match at one set apiece. The Colonels took control of the set with an early 6-0 run thanks to a kill and an ace by
Abby Dornblaser (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) and an additional kill by
Leah Nagle (Orefield, PA/Northwestern Lehigh). Wilkes led by as much as eight points, before the Falcons stormed back to tie the set at 23. Two attack errors by the hosts stopped the run in its tracks, giving the Colonels the second set.
Lackawanna responded with a 25-20 win in set three, but the Colonels once again answered the call and sent the game to a fifth set. Wilkes took firm control of the set early as a pair of Dornblaser kills helped a four-point run that turned an 8-6 lead into a 12-6 advantage that proved to be too much for the hosts to overcome. Kalp finished off the set with a strong kill to send the match to set five.
Down 7-4 in the final set, Wilkes flipped the script with another four-point run to take an 8-7 lead, helped on by another Dornblaser kill and a Nagle ace. The Colonels would not give the lead up again, staving off a late charge by the Falcons to win 15-12 on an
Annalyse Santowasso (Middlesex, NJ/Rutgers Prep) ace.
Dornblaser led the Colonel offense with 15 kills and two aces, followed closely by Nagle with 11 and her own pair of aces.
Maddy Durfee (Attica, NY/Attica) served up 25 assists on the day, while
Ava Wahlers (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) led all players with five blocks on the defensive side, as three Colonels finished with over 20 digs. Santowasso (32), Nagle (22), and Kalp (20) all made major contributions for the Wilkes defense, with Santowasso and Nagle registering new season-highs.
Jana Hofman led all players with 22 kills, while Syriana Smith served 21 assists. Adalee Rosado Rivera led the Falcon defense with 23 digs.
Wilkes gets a well-deserved week of rest before returning to the Marts Center for their final two matches of the season, beginning on Friday, October 30
