Late Goal Lifts Moravian Over Wilkes Women's Soccer

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's soccer team matched up against Moravian on Saturday in a pivotal Landmark Conference contest, where Amanda McNesby's goal in the 78th minute lifted the Greyhounds to a 1–0 victory.

Moravian had an opportunity to open the scoring in the fifth minute when Maddy Marretta worked around Wilkes' goalkeeper Delaney Yaracs (Butler, PA/Butler), but a save by a Colonel defender kept the contest scoreless. The Colonels got a good look of their own in the 28th minute when Sarah Straup (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) found an open shot, but was saved and cleared by the Greyhounds. Wilkes landed three shots on frame in the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net, making it a scoreless game heading into the half.

The Colonels began the second half creating chances, starting with a shot by Mia Black (Swarthmore, PA/Delaware Valley Friends School) in the 55th minute and another by Ava Young (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) in the 58th minute. Wilkes' best scoring chance arguably came in the 69th minute when Emma Devers (Macungie, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) beat a Moravian defender to get an open look, but the shot sailed just over the goal. After over 75 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Greyhounds opened the scoring when McNesby scored off a corner kick in the 78th minute. The Colonels landed two shots on goal in the final five minutes, one by Abby Bolz (Fair Hill, MD/Rising Sun) and the other by Izzy Kee (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), but could not break through as the Greyhounds earned the 1–0 victory.

The win for Moravian keeps the Greyhounds third in the conference at 5–3 and 9–4–2 overall. The Colonels drop to sixth in the Landmark standings with a 3–3–2 record and sit at 9–6–2 overall.

Wilkes outshot Moravian 17–9, including 11–4 in the second half. Bolz and Devers led the Colonels with three shots each, and Yaracs played all 90 minutes in goal.

The Colonels conclude the regular season at Lycoming on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7:00 p.m. The Colonels can clinch their first-ever Landmark Conference Championship berth with a win or a Susquehanna draw or loss at Goucher.
