Men's Soccer Drops Landmark Home Opener Against Juniata

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Wilkes University men's soccer team faced off against Juniata College in its first Landmark Conference game played at Bruggeworth Field on Saturday afternoon, where the Colonels fell to the Eagles by a 3–0 decision.

The outcome drops Wilkes to 0–8–1 overall and 0–2 in Landmark play, while Juniata improves to 5–4–1, picking up its first points in conference play.

The Eagles struck first in the 23rd minute when Stevee Jean-Baptiste found the back of the net off a deflected Matthew Conti (Florence, NJ/Florence Township Memorial High School) save. Conti delivered the highlight of the first half for the Colonels a few moments later when he stopped a point-blank bicycle kick attempt by Juniata. The Eagles doubled their lead in the 37th minute with a set-piece goal by JC Mazzarella, and Juniata took its two-goal cushion into the break.

Juniata tacked on its third goal in the 60th minute when Jean-Baptiste scored his second on the day off a cross from Jalen Holiday. The Colonels were able to generate a couple of chances late, including a long shot from Athanasios Valasis (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) that stayed just within the reach of the Eagles goalkeeper. However, the Colonels did not find the back of the net, and the Eagles cruised to a 3–0 victory.

Juniata outshot Wilkes 18–6, including 12–2 on goal. The Eagles also drew 10 corner kicks to the Colonels' two.

Matthew Conti (Florence, NJ/Florence Township Memorial High School) played all 90 minutes in goal, matching a season-best with eight saves.

The Colonels return to action on Wednesday at Susquehanna University, with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m.
