Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Battles to a 2–2 Draw at Stevenson

REISTERSTOWN, Md. – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team was back in action Saturday night at Stevenson, battling to a 2–2 tie with the Mustangs in a physical contest before earning a 2–0 shootout victory.

The draw is the first on the season for both sides, with Wilkes at 2-1-1 and Stevenson at 3-0-1. Both teams now sit at 1-0-1 in Middle Atlantic Conference play.

Cooper Owens (Colorado Springs, CO), who had Friday's game-winner against Alvernia, opened the night's scoring at 9:38, just nine seconds into Wilkes' first power play. The Colonels' defense held strong to take a 1–0 lead into the first intermission, despite being outshot 14–8 by the Mustangs.

The Colonels created plenty of scoring opportunities throughout the second period, including three power-play chances. The Colonels capitalized on the third power play when Daniel Nau (Wake Forest, NC/) scored his fourth goal of the season at 14:41 to double their lead to 2–0. The Mustangs answered just 25 seconds later with a goal by Kasper Pohjala to trim Wilkes' lead to 2–1 heading into the final minutes.

The physical play peaked early in the third period when Ryan Arendes of Stevenson was called for a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct after a hit to the head. However, the Colonels could not take advantage, and Stevenson scored the game-tying goal at 9:19 to send the game into three-on-three overtime.

The Mustangs outshot Wilkes 3–0 in the extra period, but three solid saves by goaltender Jeffrey Fillion (Chicoutimi, QC) finalized the score at a 2–2 draw. Nau and Owens, the two goal scorers, buried goals in the shootout, and a pair of Fillion saves gave Wilkes the shootout victory.

The Mustangs outshot Wilkes 36–29 and controlled 35 of 68 faceoffs, compared to Wilkes' 33. Owens led the Colonels with two points and took four shots. Owen Hardy (Ottawa, ON) led the Colonels with five shot attempts, and Nau won 16 of 28 faceoffs in addition to his goal. Fillion made a career-high 34 saves.

Wilkes begins next weekend with a trip to Lebanon Valley College on Friday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m., then faces Misericordia at the Toyota SportsPlex on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 7:10 p.m.
