No. 9 Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Alvernia 3-1

WILKES-BARRE – After defeating the Golden Wolves 7-0 last night, the No. 9-ranked Wilkes University women's ice hockey team completed the home weekend sweep of Alvernia University with a 3-1 win at the Toyota SportsPlex on Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels improve to 2-0 overall and in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) play, while Alvernia falls to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in MAC play.

After a scoreless first that saw the Colonels fire 19 shots on goal, it was the Golden Wolves that struck first at the 7:15 mark in the second period as Addy Gularte opened the day's scoring. Just over a minute later Delaney Howard (Pittsburgh, PA) tied the game back up at one with her second goal of the weekend, firing home the rebound after a saved shot.

Megan Bell (Waterloo, ON/St. David Catholic) put the Colonels ahead with just over two minutes left in the period, burying the cross-ice pass from Lily Zingaro (Collingwood, ON) in the top-left corner to make it 2-1 Wilkes.
Jordan Ferry (Bohemia, NY/) put the game away late, netting a backhanded shot with just 2:15 to play in the third period to seal the deal for the blue and gold.

Zingaro led the Colonels with two points on the day, assisting on the Howard and Bell goals. Kayla Lunney (Birmingham, MI) led the team with 12 total shots and eight on goal, picking up an assist as well. In net, Emily Connell (Berwick, NS) made 21 saves in the complete-game effort.

Gularte led the Golden Wolves with nine shots and six on goal, while Arianna Evans led all players with four blocked shots. In goal, Skorupa made 49 saves.

Wilkes returns to the Toyota SportsPlex on Tuesday, November 10 as they welcome No.12-ranked Elmira College for an exciting non-conference clash. Puck drop against the Eagles is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
