Wilkes Women's Basketball Downed by Drew on the Road
MADISON, N.J. – Despite outscoring the hosts the second half, the Wilkes University women's basketball team fell to the Rangers of Drew University 61-55 in Landmark Conference action at Baldwin Gymnasium Wednesday night.
Wilkes falls to 5-17 on the year and 2-13 in conference play, while Drew improves to 12-9 overall with an 8-7 conference record.
The Colonels took the lead in the first, turning a 3-6 deficit into a 10-6 lead thanks to an
Anya Richet (Plymouth, PA/Wyoming Valley West) layup and a trey from
Carolyn Lundy (Fair Haven, NJ/St. John Vianney). Drew responded with a five-point sequence of their own to take the lead before
Dana Wartzenluft (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) snatched it back with another three to make it 13-11 Colonels. However, four points to end the quarter by the Rangers gave the hosts the lead going into the second 15-13.
Drew took over in the second quarter, outscoring the Colonels 19-7 to take a 34-20 lead into halftime.
Wilkes found their stride again in the third, putting together their highest-scoring quarter of the evening and out-performing the Rangers 18-13 in the period. Warren led the Colonels with five points in the period, followed by Richet and
Addison Place (Dover, PA/Northern York) with four. Wilkes went on a 13-4 run over the final five minutes of the quarter to go into the fourth down 38-47.
With 1:14 left in the game, Warren hit her third triple of the night to cut the margin down to 51-58, kicking off a 7-2 run that brought the Colonels within five points with just :24 seconds left to play. Unfortunately, Wilkes' tremendous second half effort fell just short, with the final score 61-55 in favor of the Rangers at the final buzzer.
Warren led the Colonels with 15 points, followed by Richet's second consecutive double-double on 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) led the team with four assists.
Maddie Byer and Gianna Pica led Drew with 12 points each, with the latter grabbing a team-high six boards. Jocelyn Kingsley led the team with four assists.
Wilkes continues its four-game road trip with a trip to Elizabethtown this Saturday, facing off against the Blue Jays at 4:00 p.m.
