Wilkes Baseball's Ninth Inning Comeback Clinches Doubleheader Sweep over Moravian
GAME ONE
EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Wilkes University baseball team continued their Landmark Conference-opening homestand on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against Moravian University. Powered by high-powered offense in game one and a late comeback in game two, the Colonels opened their weekend series with some fireworks at Bruggeworth Field.
With the pair of wins Wilkes moves to 8-5 in the 2026 season and remains unbeaten in Landmark play thus far. The Greyhounds fall to 7-7, with a Landmark record of 2-3. Furthermore, the Colonels remain unbeaten all-time in Landmark play against Moravian, with a record of 8-0 since 2024.
Moravian began the first inning of game one with a lead-off double to right field from Troy Rabosky. After that, Colonels left-hander AJ Levandoski (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) sent the next three Greyhound batters down in order, recording two strikeouts in the inning.
Nathan Loch (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) led off the bottom of the first with a walk, later advancing to second and stealing third. Jack Mathis (Exeter PA/Wyoming Area) drove in the opening run with an RBI groundout, bringing Loch home for 1-0.
Levandoski dominated in the next inning, striking out the side in the top of the second. The Colonels then added to their lead in the bottom of the second, when Devin Markert (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) was brought home on another RBI groundout, this time off the bat of Matthew Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights).
Rabosky answered back for Moravian in the top of the third when he launched a home run to deep left field to tie things up at two.
The game remained knotted up until the bottom of the fifth, when the Colonels opened it up with a four-run inning. After a throwing error, both Loch and Jake Miller (Chambersburg, PA/James Buchanan) scored to give Wilkes a 4-2 lead. Michael Sabella (Cornelius, NC/Hough) and Gavin Lacoe (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) picked up a pair of RBI singles to left field, pushing the Colonels' lead to 6-2.
In the Bottom of the sixth, the Colonels unleashed offensively once more. Two more RBI singles to the outfield from Loch and Andres Cruz (Wayne, PA/Radnor) made it an 8-2 contest before Devin Markert (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) hit a home run to left-center field. When all was said and done, the Colonels came away from the inning with an 11-2 lead.
Moravian answered back in the top of the seventh, notching two runs on the board. Jack Cappo singled up the middle to bring home Sean Superka, with Ronnie Wekheiser later walking with the bases loaded to drive in another run for the Greyhounds.
Later on in the bottom of the eighth, Mathis scored a run off a sac-fly RBI from Markert to make it 12-4. Nikolas Schwartz (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth, securing the victory in the first leg of the doubleheader.
Levandoski earned the win, going six innings while striking out eight and allowing an earned run, improving his record to 2-1 on the year. Ian Keane (Middletown, DE/Saint Mark's) came into the game from the bullpen, going two innings, striking out one, walking five and allowing two earned runs.
Ross Huffman started game one for Moravian, going two innings while allowing two runs on one hit and three walks. He struck out two batters. Nate McBride earned the loss in relief, giving up five earned runs on ten hits and a walk.
GAME TWO
In game two, Mike Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) began the game with four strikeouts in the first two innings. Later on in the bottom of the second, the Colonels opened the scoring again when Jacob Cambria (Elysburg, PA/Southern Columbia) hit a sac-fly RBI, followed by Jack Vieth coming home on an error to make it a 2-0 contest early on.
Mike Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) followed up with another three strikeouts in the top of the third. He picked up his eighth strikeout in the fourth inning, as the Colonels held on to their lead through four.
In the fifth inning it was all Moravian as they answered back in a big way. The Greyhounds tallied seven runs in the inning, forcing Mike Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) out of the game. RBI hits from Superka, Luke Keitsock, Werkheiser and David Vozzo put the visitors ahead 7-2.
The Colonels answered back in the bottom of the frame when Markert nabbed an infield hit, bringing Mathis home to cut the deficit to four. Shaun O'Donnell (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) entered the game in relief in the top of the sixth, sending Moravian down in order, striking out two.
Wilkes cut the deficit to three when Cambria hit an RBI groundout, bringing Veith home in the bottom of the sixth. Later on in the bottom of the seventh inning, Cruz singled to right field, bringing pinch runner Richie Rossi (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) home to make it a 7-5 contest.
Moravian tacked another run on the board in the eighth, with Keitsock hitting a sac-fly RBI to left field to bring Vozzo home.
In the ninth inning, the Colonels launched their comeback to clinch the doubleheader sweep. Moravian pitching threw 12-straight balls to load the bases, with Cruz walking to bring in a run shortly thereafter. After Miller pitched a scoreless inning in the top of the frame, he doubled to left-center field, tying the game at eight runs apiece,
Matthew Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) was then intentionally walked to load the bases once more, with Cambria being walked on five pitches to bring Cruz home from third, clinching a comeback victory in walk-off fashion.
Between the two games, Colonels pitching combined for 21 strikeouts, with 12 coming in game two. Miller earned his first collegiate win on the mound for Wilkes, while Nick Leonard was given the loss for Moravian.
The Colonels and Greyhounds return to Bruggeworth Field tomorrow, March 22 for the conclusion of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
