Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Loses Overtime Heartbreaker in NCAA Quarterfinal against Nazareth
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Wilkes University women's ice hockey team saw yet another historic season come to an end Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Division III National Championship Quarterfinal round, falling to Nazareth University 2-1 in overtime at the Rochester Ice Center.
Wilkes finishes the year with a 25-2-1 overall record, setting a new benchmark in the record book for single season wins.
The Colonels out-shot the Golden Flyers 9-6 in the first period, with goaltender
Audrey Milne (London, ON) called into action early to make some flashy saves and keep the hosts off the board. The game remained scoreless until the final five minutes of the second period where
Gianna Pacilio (Franklinville, NJ/) put the Colonels ahead after a pass across the face of goal by
Megan Bell (Waterloo, ON/St. David Catholic) at 16:33.
Nazareth responded in the third period at 6:30, as Meredith Boettcher intercepted a Colonel pass and finished the shorthanded goal on the breakaway to even the score. Milne made eight saves in the period to help the Colonels force overtime, saving a handful more breakaway chances by the Golden Flyers.
Wilkes started the extra frame with a 5-on-4 but quickly killed the remaining penalty time but were unable to find the back of the net as Logan Marchese netted the game winner for Nazareth to send them to the Frozen Four 4:33 into the overtime period.
Megan Bell (Waterloo, ON/St. David Catholic) led all players with six shots on the day and a helper on the Pacilio goal, followed by
Haylee Bouchard (Sioux Lookout, ON/) with five.
Jordan Ferry (Bohemia, NY) led all Colonels from the faceoff circle going 10-19. Between the pipes, Milne made 35 saves in defeat.
Amy Laskowski matched Bell with six shots for Nazareth, while Mia Gonsalves finished the day with 30 saves in goal.
