WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes University men's volleyball team snapped a four-game losing streak with an impressive 3-0 victory over Penn State-Schuylkill Tuesday night at the Marts Center.
The Colonels improve to 11-13 this season, while the Nittany Lions fall to 2-12 this season after the loss.
Set one was the only close set of the match. The Nittany Lions took a 14-10 lead midway through, but the Colonels responded with five-straight points to take their first lead of the set. Another 4-0 run later in the set helped secure a 25-21 set one victory for Wilkes.
Wilkes pulled their starters for a new lineup in set two, but the results didn't suffer. Aiden Amon (Pittstown, NJ/North Hunterdon), Marcus Binner (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock), and James Brust (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) guided the Colonels to a 14-10 lead of their own, and then they got some help from Evanston Myers (Lake Winola, PA/Tunkhannock) chipped in as well to make the set the blowout. Wilkes scored 10 of the final 12 points in the second set to win it 25-15.
Set three was more of the same. This time the Colonels took a commanding 10-3 lead early on, and they never took their foot off the gas. They increased their lead to as much as 13 (22-9) at one point, and ultimately closed out the sweep with a 25-13 win.
Amon led the team in kills with seven, and also had two service aces and two digs. Binner had his best game of the season by finishing with five kills, three service aces, and two digs. Logan Maha (Sayville, NY/Sayville) chipped in with five kills and a .571 attack percentage in just the first set, and Myers finished with four kills, two solo blocks, and three digs.
As a team, Wilkes finished with a .318 attack percentage, 11 service aces, 36 kills, and 31 assists. Meanwhile, PSU-Schuylkill had a -.077 attack percentage, nine kills, five aces, and nine assists as a team.
The Colonels return to the floor on Friday, March 27 at 7 p.m. for another conference game against Elizabethtown College.
