Wilkes Baseball Picks up Tenth Conference Win of the Season at Lycoming College

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Wilkes University baseball team clinched a season series win over Lycoming College Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Warriors 9-6 at Brandon Park for their tenth conference win.

Wilkes improves to 13-7 overall (10-1 Landmark) with the victory, while Lycoming falls to 13-12 (6-6 Landmark) on the year.

The Colonels drew first blood in the bottom of the first, as Jeremiah Atwell's (Eastlake, OH/Willoughby South) sacrifice fly to center field plated Nathan Loch (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) to make it a 1-0 game. The hosts responded in the second to tie the game again, before Devin Markert's (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) single in the third gave the Colonels the lead again. A few batters later with the bases loaded, Evan Melberger's (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) ground-rule double plated two more to extend the Colonel lead to 4-1.

Andres Cruz (Wayne, PA/Radnor) added another in the fourth inning, reaching on a fielder's choice. In the next at-bat, Jack Mathis (Exeter PA/Wyoming Area) stole home to push the lead to 6-1. Lycoming then rallied back with three runs in the fifth, bringing the hosts to within two runs.

In the seventh, Richie Rossi (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) scored the Colonels' seventh run on a pass ball, after pinch running for Markert and advancing to third on two wild pitches. Jake Miller (Chambersburg, PA/James Buchanan) then restored the five-run lead in the ninth with a two-run double to left center that made it 9-4 Wilkes.

Despite scoring two in the ninth, Ethan Grodack (Lake Ariel, PA/Western Wayne) shut down the Warriors offense in the bottom of the ninth to take the 9-6 victory.

Melberger led the Colonels going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs, with Jack Smale (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) also registering a multi-hit day with two. Shaun O'Donnell (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) got the win (2-0) on the mound giving up no runs in 3.1 innings of relief work with two strikeouts. Grodack earned his second save of the season, pitching 1.2 innings with two K's.

Eric MacCluen led the Warriors going 3-for-5 with three RBIs. On the mound, Landon Evans (0-3) took the loss allowing four runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings.

Wilkes returns to the field on Friday, April 3rd as they travel to Elizabethtown for a three-game series. Game one of the day's doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
