Wilkes Baseball Concludes Spring Break Trip With Loss To Alvernia
FORT PIERCE, FL. – Wilkes University baseball concluded their spring break slate of games in Florida this morning, suffering an 8-5 loss to Alvernia University
Wilkes falls to 3-4 in the early part of the 2026 season, while the Golden Wolves improve to 3-3. The Colonels amassed a record of 2-3 while in the Sunshine State.
The Navy and Gold came away with an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Devin Markert (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) drove in Jack Smale (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) with an RBI single. Michael Sabella (Cornelius, NC/Hough) then smacked a base hit to center field, allowing Markert to score from second base.
Alvernia tied the game up in the top of the third with RBI singles from Timmy Hitchcock and Mike Pulcini. The Colonels answered back in the second half of the inning with an RBI groundout from Andres Cruz (Wayne, PA/Radnor) to send the two sides to the fourth inning with Wilkes holding the 3-2 advantage.
AJ Levandoski (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) ran into trouble in the top of the sixth inning with the bases loaded. A walk issed to Quincy Esannason brought in the tying run. Liam Huffman (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) then entered the game from the bullpen, allowing a a two-run double from Mike Pulcini to give the Golden Wolves a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Smale hit a two-run single to center, bringing in Nathan Loch (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) and Richie Rossi (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) to tie things up at five runs apiece.
In the eighth inning, Pulcini struck again, this time with a two-run single to make it 7-5. Later on in the inning, An error in left field from Mike Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) allowed Pulcini to score, giving Alvernia an 8-5 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Loch singled before Smale was hit by a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate. Show grounded into a double play before Devin Markert (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) ended the game with a strikeout to give Alvernia the win.
Levandoski went 5.2 innings in the start for the Colonels, allowing five earned runs on four hits, five walks and two HBP. He struck out seven. Liam Huffman (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South), Riley Jagger (Hop Bottom, PA/Mountain View) and Hunter Lawall (West Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) combined for 4.1 innings. Jagger was given the loss.
Chris Sasso pitched for six innings, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk. He retired seven batters on strikes. Nick Ferraioli earned the win on the mound for the Golden Wolves.
The Colonels return to Bruggeworth Field on Tuesday, March 12 for a non-conference matchup against Ithaca College. First pitch against the Bombers is set for 4:30 p.m.
