Wilkes Softball Drops Non-Conference Matchup Against Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Wilkes University softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Haverford College Saturday afternoon at the Class of '95 Field. With the pair of losses, the Colonels fall to 13-11 overall, while the Fords improve to 23-5 on the season.

Game 1: Wilkes 0, Haverford 6

Lauren DeMarco (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) got the start in the circle for Wilkes and kept the Fords in check through the first four innings, allowing just two hits while facing 13 batters and issuing one walk.

Despite the strong start, the Colonels were unable to capitalize offensively, stranding seven runners over the first four frames.

Haverford broke through in the bottom of the fifth, as Jocelyn Leal delivered an RBI single to bring home Lauren Martin. The Fords followed with a five-run surge in the inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead heading into the final two frames.

Wilkes was unable to generate a response at the plate, as Haverford closed out the shutout victory.

DeMarco was charged with the loss, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing six runs on six hits. Victoria Butler (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) led the Colonels offensively, going 2-for-3.

Anna Stowe earned the win for Haverford, tossing 5.1 innings while allowing six hits in the shutout effort.

Game 2: Wilkes 7, Haverford 11

Wilkes struck first in game two, as Mia Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Allyson Stafursky (Eynon, PA/Valley View) and give the Colonels a 1-0 lead in the opening inning. Haverford answered in the bottom half with an RBI single to even the score.

The game remained tied through the second before the Fords broke it open in the third, plating seven runs to build an 8-1 advantage.

Wilkes responded by cutting into the deficit, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Victoria Butler (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) and an RBI from Julia Kapitula (Mount Olive, NJ/Mount Olive) on a fielder's choice. Haverford added another run in the fifth, but the Colonels continued to battle, pushing three more runs across late in an attempt to rally.

The comeback effort fell short, however, as the Fords secured the 11-7 victory to complete the sweep.

Audrey Rinda (Easton, PA/Easton Area) took the loss, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with two strikeouts. Butler, Allyson Stafursky (Eynon, PA/Valley View), and Talia Piragas (Old Forge, PA/Old Forge) each recorded two hits, with Butler driving in two runs.

Lauren Lamme earned the win for Haverford, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Jocelyn Leal and Lauren Martin each tallied two RBIs to lead the Fords offensively.

Wilkes will close out its stretch of doubleheaders on Sunday, April 12, hosting Misericordia University at the Ralston Athletic Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., with Senior Day recognition set for 12:45 p.m.
