GALLOWAY, Nj. - The Wilkes University women's volleyball team started the season hot with a 6-0 record before falling to Stockton University and Randolph-Macon College in Saturday afternoon's tri-match.
After both of the losses, the Colonels drop to a 6-2 record.
Game 1: Randolph-Macon: 3, Wilkes 0
Wilkes started off the first set with two service aces from
Abby Dornblaser (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) and an attacking error from Randolph-Macon, leading the set 3-0. The Colonels and the Yellow Jackets traded points, but Randolph-Macon delivered the final push to secure the set 25-21.
In another toe-to-toe set, Wilkes battled through the offensive attack from Randolph-Macon. Wilkes was up 9-8 in the set, but the Yellow Jackets were able to climb themselves out of the deficit on a 6-1 run. Randolph-Macon ended the set with a service ace, taking the second set 25-20.
Wilkes showed plenty of fight in a nail-biting set with major kills from Dornblaser and
Kendra Kalp (Somerset, PA/Rockwood), but the Yellow Jackets finalized the match in a 5-2 run.
Emilee Atherholt (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) led the team in kills with eight and two blocks, followed closely behind by
Mia Leon (Ponce, PR/Caribbean) with seven kills and one block.
Kendra Kalp (Somerset, PA/Rockwood) was the leader in digs with 11, and
Maddy Durfee (Attica, NY/Attica) was top of the leader board for assists with 12.
Game 2: Stockton 3, Wilkes 0
After falling in the first match, Wilkes looked for an opportunity to get a win on the road. The first set for the Colonels started off strong with a kill from Leon, service ace from Dornblaser, and a kill from Kalp. Despite Wilkes' offensive efforts, Stockton put on an outstanding performance in the attack, securing the set 25-13. The second set was more of the same as Stockton dominated on offense, taking the set 25-13.
With their eyes set on a sweep, the Ospreys took the lead with an aggressive attack that put them up 18-5. The Colonels showed fight as they tried to crawl their way back into the match with kills from Dornbalser and Altherhoult. Stockton ultimately took the set 25-13, winning the match in a 3-0 sweep.
Leon finished the match with seven kills, and Durfee led the team in assists with 10. Dornblaser led the team in digs with nine, followed closely by
Annalyse Santowasso (Middlesex, NJ/Rutgers Prep).
The Colonels return to action on the road against Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday, September 15 at 7 p.m.
