Wilkes Women's Volleyball Falls to Misericordia 3-0
DALLAS, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team fell to the Misericordia Cougars in a 3-0 sweep on Wednesday evening.
The loss drops the Colonels to 8-5 on the season, while the Cougars improve to a 5-4 record.
Wilkes and Misericordia matched each other in the beginning of the first set. The Cougars went on a 4-0 surge, pushing ahead 20-14 to take control of the set.
Mia Leon (Ponce, PR/Caribbean) and
Ava Wahlers (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) attempted to crawl out of the deficit with essential kills, but it proved not to be enough as Misericordia took the set 25-20.
The second set was another nail-biter as Wilkes found themselves up on Misericordia 11-10, with colossal service aces from
Charlize Leukus (York haven, PA/Red Land) and a kill from
Kendra Kalp (Somerset, PA/Rockwood). Despite the early momentum, the Cougars settled in and closed the set strong, securing the set 25-19.
Entering the third set, the Colonels brought the energy with three straight points highlighted by a major kill and service ace from
Abby Dornblaser (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown). The Colonels' point surge did not sway the Cougars as they had their eyes set on a sweep with a six-point run to regain control. Wilkes continued to fight to match Misericordia's tempo, but it did not prove to be enough as Misericordia secured the sweep.
Leon led the team in kills and aces as she ended the match with eight kills and five aces. Rachel Anderson finished with a double digit assist with 11, followed closely behind was
Maddy Durfee (Attica, NY/Attica) with nine.
The Colonels return to action on Saturday, September 26 for a tri-match against Penn State Abington and the City College of New York. The matches will begin at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
