Wilkes Women's Volleyball Defeats FDU-Florham in a Reverse Sweep
MADISON, Nj. - The Wilkes University women's volleyball team carried their momentum from Tuesday night into their match against FDU-Florham, earning a 3-2 comeback victory over the Devils, with Abby Dornblaser (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) securing the win with a kill.
Wilkes started hot in the first set with kills from Mia Leon (Ponce, PR/Caribbean), Emilee Alterholt, and Kendra Kalp (Somerset, PA/Rockwood) putting them ahead 15-8. FDU-Florham was able to find their rhythm and battled to win the set in a four-point run.
The Colonels found a spark during the third set and were able to match FDU-Florham's energy in a back-and-forth affair. Wilkes found themselves tied 21-21, but were able to pull away in a 4-1 run. Leon delivered a kill and a service ace back to back, securing the third set.
In the fourth set, Wilkes went on a dominant 7-0 run thanks to a service ace from Maddy Durfee (Attica, NY/Attica) and kills by Olivia Contreras (Northridge, CA/Grover Cleveland) and Leon. Despite FDU-Florham's effort, the Devils were unable to keep up with the fiery tempo of Wilkes' offense.
During the final set, Wilkes traded points with FDU-Florham before the Colonels secured the win in a 15-10 set, with crucial service aces from Kendra Kalp (Somerset, PA/Rockwood) and kills from Dornblaser and Contreras.
Leon had a dominant performance and led Wilkes with 15 kills and 4 blocks, followed by Dornblaser with 14 kills and 2 service aces. Maddy Durfee (Attica, NY/Attica) led the team in assists with 23 while Kendra Kalp (Somerset, PA/Rockwood) led the team in digs with 29.
The Colonels will travel to Delaware Valley University on Saturday, September 5 for a tri-match against the host and Cedar Crest College. The matches begin at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. respectively.
