Field Hockey Falls to Montclair State in Extra Time

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Olivia Ent scored the game-winning goal nearly three minutes into the second overtime period as Montclair State recorded a 2–1 victory over the Wilkes University field hockey team Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels drop to 0–2 after the defeat, while the Red Hawks improve to 1–1 on the young season.

The Colonels jumped out to a 1–0 lead exactly halfway through the first quarter when Maddie Karp (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) scored her first goal of the season off a give-and-go from Taylor Bower (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg). Defenses controlled the remainder of the first half, with only four combined shots taken by both teams, and Wilkes held its 1–0 lead into halftime.

Montclair State evened the score at 1–1 in the third quarter when Colleen McGavin scored at the 34:01 mark to set up a tied contest heading into the fourth quarter.

The Colonels got a great opportunity early in the fourth quarter when Morgan Hermanfoski drew a Montclair State yellow card, but were unable to equalize, as the game headed to overtime still knotted at 1–1.

After a scoreless first overtime, Ent scored the game-deciding goal 2:58 into the second extra period, and Montclair State secured its first win of the season.

The Red Hawks outshot Wilkes 15–9, including 10–5 on goal. Karp led Wilkes with six shot attempts, four of those being on target. Chloe Gilroy (Manchester, NH/Pace University) played the entire game in goal, recording eight saves.

Prior to the game, Wilkes Athletics took a moment to honor former head coach and athletic director Addy Malatesta, who passed away in July. Malatesta spent 34 years with Wilkes athletics, including as the team's head coach from 1989–2002.

The Colonels will make a trip down to Reading on Wednesday night to face Alvernia University at 7:00 p.m.
