Matt Wotherspoon enters his second season as an assistant coach with Wilkes Baseball in 2023.
Wotherspoon was drafted in the 20th round of the 2013 MLB Draft with the 606th overall pick of the Detroit Tigers but did not sign. He was then drafted in the 34th round of the 2014 MLB Draft with the 1022nd overall pick of the New York Yankees. Wotherspoon was traded to the Baltimore Orioles on July 2, 2017 and made his MLB debut with the Orioles on April 3, 2019 where he appeared in two games and 4.2 innings. On August 23, 2019 he was signed by the Detroit Tigers to a minor league contract and assigned to the AAA Toledo Mud Hens.
He has played on seven minor league teams at the A, AA, and AAA levels between 2014-2019. In 189 appearances and 36 starts, he has pitched 461.1 innings with a 3.61 ERA and a 26-21 career record with 488 strikeouts.
Wotherspoon is from Mountain Top, Pa. and went to Crestwood High School. With Crestwood he held a 1.48 ERA his junior year and a 1.70 ERA his senior year. Wotherspoon tallied a career record of 10-3 and led Crestwood to the 2009 district championship game, won the 2009 Wyoming Valley Conference and League Championship for the Mountain Post American Legion team, was a two-time selection for the Wyoming Valley Conference All-Star team, and a three-time member of the Pocono Region Keystone team in the Keystone Games.
He then played collegiate baseball at the University of Pittsburgh from 2011-2014. Wotherspoon was a second team All-Big East selection as a junior in 2013 and concluded his career with 60 appearances, including 50 starts with a career record of 23-15 and a 4.26 ERA. He recorded 327.1 innings of work in four seasons and struck out 261 batters.
