Phil Wingert will be starting his 30th year as the head coach of the men's soccer program at Wilkes University in 2011. With a career mark of 272-237-41, Wingert is the winningest coach in the program's history, as he's registered double-figure victories 15 times and has led the Colonels to the postseason 14 times in the last 21 years.
He's led Wilkes to the Freedom Conference tournament six times in the last seven seasons, including a six-year run from 2004 to 2009 where the Colonels won 60 games.
In 2010, Wingert coached second team All-Freedom performer Ed Zulkoski, one of 81 all-conference members for Wilkes since 1982. As a team, the Colonels earned all-academic status from the NSCAA for their exceptional work in the classroom, combining for a 3.12 grade point average.
In 2008, Wingert led the Colonels to an 11-8-3 mark, including a berth in the ECAC tournament. In 2004 he earned Freedom Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors after leading Wilkes to a conference playoff berth with an 8-7-2 overall record.
Under Wingert's guidance, the Colonels won the ECAC Southern Division championship in 1990, the MAC Northeast Division title in 1992 and a share of the MAC Freedom League title in 1997. His 1991 squad set a school record with 16 wins a year after winning 15 games, which was part of a four-year stretch with an incredible 53 wins.
A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a degree in Physical Education and a Master's Degree in Athletic Administration from Virginia Tech, Wingert was an assistant coach at Virginia Tech before taking over at Wilkes.
Along with coaching soccer, Wingert is the Associate Athletic Director at Wilkes, a position he assumed in July of 1998. Prior to that he spent six years as the Athletic Director at Wilkes.
Wingert, his wife Antoinette, daughter Laura Marie, and son Robert reside in Wilkes-Barre.
