Box Score

Wilkes University head coach Sara Myers picked up her first-ever win over No. 11 Montclair State as the Lady Colonels improved to 11-1 on the year with a 3-1 victory. The win over the Red Hawks marks the first-ever win over a ranked opponent for Myers.

Wilkes' Brittany Sines (Afton, N.Y./Afton Central) put the Lady Colonels on the board early as she knocked in a pass from Diana Wright (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) in traffic just under three minutes in for the early lead. The score was Sines' third goal of the season and would later pick up her fourth assist on the year when she passed a ball to Gina Elmy (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R.), who scored the game-winner at the 14:56 mark.

Montclair State tied the match at one when Deana Hagel scored an unassisted goal at the 12:17 mark, before Elmy was able to put the Lady Colonels up for good. “I think not having a game this past week really allowed us to work on the little things in practice like our support around the ball, intercepting passes and going hard to every ball,” Myers said. “I believe we did all of that, especially going at each ball aggressively which is what I think won the game for us today.”

After missing the past two games because of a head injury, Alyssa Koncelik (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) scored her team-high 10th goal of the season at the 36-minute mark to give Wilkes a commanding 3-1 lead, which it would not relinquish. Alyson Paulauskas (Shavertown, Pa./Lake-Lehman) crossed the ball through the middle for her first assist of the season.

Defensively, the Lady Colonels as well as goalkeeper Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) staved off a flurry of offensive attacks from the Red Hawks. Montclair State had 12 total shots, eight of which were on goal, the majority of which came in the second half.

Kerry Battersby (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway) played an amazing 70 minutes today,” Myers said. “She held our defense together when they were threatened and was as solid as I have seen her play all year.”

The Lady Colonels had 14 total shots, three from Elmy and Wright, including eight on goal.

Wilkes will be back in action Tuesday when it heads to Purchase, N.Y. to face Manhattanville.
