READING – Alvernia had four players score in double-figures and took advantage of poor shooting by Wilkes to take a 75-66 win over the Colonels. Wilkes shot better from beyond the three-point line (34.5 percent) than their combined total (32.2 percent) as it moved to 9-5 over all and 5-2 in Freedom Conference play.
Chris DeRojas (Kingston, Pa./Bishop O'Reilly) found his shooting touch, hitting 7-of-20 shots from the field and hit five of the team's three-pointers for a game-high 24 points.
Tom Kresge (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) was the only other Wilkes player to score in double-figures with 13 and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Alvernia's Derek Dubbs hit a three pointer 48 seconds in the first half for his only bucket of the game, but it gave the Crusaders the lead for good as they led from wire to wire. Alvernia opened the game with a 7-0 run before DeRojas scored for the Colonels at the 17:39 mark.
David Washington hit a jumper from the outside with 5:26 to go before the break giving the Crusaders a 27-17 lead. They would eventually take a 37-23 lead into the half. Wilkes struggled from the field, hitting 6-of-24 shots – all of which came from behind the three point line.
Alvernia opened the second half with a 6-0 run to lead 43-23 after Marcel Roane made a layup with 18:05 to go. Kresge finally gave Wilkes its first basket of the half with a jumper at 17:46.
The Colonels finally caught fire late in the second half, using a 15-4 run to pull within five (70-65) with 44 seconds remaining, but they would come no closer the rest of the way.
Freshman
Paul Huch (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional) finished with a career-high 10 points and seven rebounds, hitting 3-of-5 shots from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the three-point line.
The Colonels will return home Monday night to host DeSales at 7 p.m. in the Marts Center.
