Box Score
The Wilkes University field hockey team hosted Alvernia Thursday, beating the Crusaders by a score of 4-1. There were no goals scored in the first half by either team, but a barrage of scores by the Lady Colonels in the second frame was the difference in the game.
In the first period there was plenty of action, as each team fired multiple shots, most of which were on goal, but neither teams defense would bend, leaving the score 0-0 going into the break.
In the second half it didn't take Wilkes long to score, as just over two minutes into the period
Jenna DiSabatino (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) found
Jennifer Keegan (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) for the game's first goal. Wilkes scored seven minutes later on a deflection goal by
Amanda Peters (Catasauqua/Catasauqua) off of a
Chelsea Minix (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway) shot. With the score 2-0
Jenna DiSabatino (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) scored two more goals, one of which was assisted by
Amanda Tilley (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh), to put the lead out of reach, 4-0. The Crusaders finally found the nets in the 67th minute, but it was too little too late as Wilkes would sustain the lead and the victory, 4-1.
Wilkes fired 25 shots in the game, while Alvernia shot 12 times. Goalie
Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) saved five Crusader shots before surrendering one goal late in the contest.
With the win the Lady Colonels improve to 8-1 on the year, and will look to maintain their winning ways when they travel to Wayne, N.J. to face William Paterson Monday, Oct. 5. That game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
