The Wilkes University women's volleyball team hosted DeSales on Tuesday, falling to the Bulldogs in three straight games in Freedom Conference action.
The Lady Colonels found themselves in the lead for most of the first game, but lost that lead late when a costly service error put DeSales up 22-21. The Bulldogs would finish strong, taking a close first game 25-22. Wilkes was led by
Marissa Harrison (Shavertown/Lake-Lehman) with seven kills on 14 attempts, while
LeeAnn Searfoss (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) recorded 10 assists.
In game two the Bulldogs jumped out to a commanding lead, one they would never surrender. DeSales was up 10-2 early on, but Wile fought back to come within three points of their opponent. The Bulldogs would once again finish strong, committing only three errors in the game, ultimately winning 25-17. Wilkes was once again led by Harrison with six kills, while Searfoss had 12 assists.
Early in game three both teams were jockeying back and forth for the lead, but with the score tied 7-7, DeSales went on an 8-0 run to pull ahead of the Lady Colonels. Wilkes would once again fight back, coming withing four points of the Bulldogs, but were never able to overtake their opponent as DeSales cruised to a 25-19 victory, securing the match.
In the contest Harrison had another solid game, killing 18 balls and recording a .231 attack percentage. Searfoss had 33 assists to go along with six digs, while
Allison Kelleher (Sayre, Pa./Athens Area) recorded 17 assists. The story of the night for Wilkes was their mistakes, as they committed twice as many errors than the Bulldogs while tallying more kills.
With the loss the Lady Colonels fall to 11-9 on the season, and are now 2-2 in Freedom Conference play. They will look to turn things around when they travel to Doylestown, Pa. to take on Delaware Valley. That match will begin at 7:00 p.m.
