The Wilkes University field hockey team hosted Hartwick College in the first round of the ECAC tournament on Wednesday, ultimately falling to the Hawks in overtime by a final score of 2-1.
Wilkes came into the game with a 15-3 record and the number one seed in the tournament. Hartwick boasted an 11-7 record, and was the eight seed.
Wilkes was in control for most of the first period, scoring the only goal of the half in the 13th minute when
Amanda Tilley (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) found
Jenna DiSabatino (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) for her 18th score of the season. Wilkes out-shot the Hawks 9-2 in the period, and had twice as many penalty corners.
In the second period the Lady Colonels kept pressure on Hartwick goalie Mackenzie Chapman, but were unable to break the Hawk defense. Meanwhile, the Hawks got off 11 shots against Wilkes, and in the 69th minute Kelsey Kimble slapped a penalty corner to Jenny Murphy who tied the game at 1-1. The game would then head to overtime.
In the extra period, Wilkes fired three shots on the Hawk defense, all of which were saved by Chapman. In the 79th minute Jen Kaye centered a pass to Kimble who fired it in for the game-winning score, securing the 2-1 victory.
With the loss the Lady Colonels end their season with a 15-4 mark, two of those losses coming in the last two games of the season.
