GRANTHAM, Pa. – Kris Krawchuk (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh),
Frank Heffernan (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) and
Zach Pizarro (Easton, Pa./Easton) each won individual titles to help Wilkes win the Messiah Invitational for the second-straight year. The Colonels scored 146 points in their title run, one-and-a-half more points than Springfield, who finished second in the event.
Not only did the Colonels earn three individual titles, but also tallied a second, third and two fourth place finishes. Krawchuk, who was seeded second in the event, won five matches en route to his first-place finish, including a pin and a major decision victory at 141.
Heffernan, who was the top seed at 174, was nearly as impressive with four victories, including a 13-2 major decision win over DJ Neri of Gettysburg. Pizarro, who was also give a top seed, won four matches, including a victory over Bill Schindel of Mount Union in the finals. Schindel was disqualied after landing an elbow in the back of Pizarro's head after trailing 6-4 in the contest.
No. 2 seeded
Anthony Dattolo (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) won four matches before falling to top-seeded John Marsh of Bridgewater State College. Dattolo recorded a pin in two minutes in his first match before winning his second match 11-2.
At 133,
Ryan Wilson (Manasquan, NJ/Wall Township) won two matches before losing in the semifinals, but came back to win two more matches in the wrestleback's to take third in his weight class. He would eventually defeat Tom Goretsas of McDaniel 5-1 in the wrestleback finals.
Scott Mantua (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) and
Nathan White (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill) both finished fourth in the 125 and 149-pound divisions. Mantua won his first match 10-0 before falling to Michael Rose of Springfield. He would defeat Earl Eppard before finishing fourth. White won his first three bouts before falling to Marsh. He would win a match in the wrestlebacks to finish fourth.
