On Saturday, Sept. 12 the Wilkes field hockey team traveled to Gwynedd Valley, Pa. to challenge the Griffins in a game that came down to the last score of the game. The Lady Colonels broke a tie late to defeat Gwynedd Mercy on a goal by Cassie DiSabatino (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood), 3-2.

In the first period Wilkes fired 16 shots on Griffin goalie Kate Eschbach, but were never able to slip one by the Gwynedd Mercy goalkeeper. Meanwhile, the Griffins scored on a penalty corner by Nicole Tourdot as Wilkes went into the break down 1-0.

In the second period Wilkes would explode for three goals, each of which on of the DiSabatino sisters either had a goal or assist. Wilkes scored two goals in two minutes early in the half, one by Jennifer Keegan (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) on a pass from Jenna DiSabatino (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood), the other by Jenna DiSabatino (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) assisted by Cassie DiSabatino (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood). Heading into the 61st minute the Colonels were still up 2-1 when Gwynedd Mercy scored to tie the match. Four minutes later Cassie DiSabatino (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) fired a shot by Eschbach, solidifying the victory for the Colonels, 3-2.

Wilkes out-shot the Griffins 26-6 on the day, while goalie Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) recorded six saves. The DiSabatino sisters each had an assist and a goal as well.

With the victory Wilkes remains undefeated at 4-0, and will look to improve on their record when they host Keystone on Thursday, Sept. 17 at Artillery Park.
