Box Score
On Wednesday the Wilkes women's volleyball team hosted FDU-Florham in each team's first conference match of the season. Despite having a better record heading into the game, the Lady Colonels fell to the Devils in four games, 24-26, 21-25, 25-20 and 17-25.
In the first game neither team was able to connect on many of their attacks, and both Wilkes and FDU-Florham had negative hitting percentages and many errors. Wilkes had an opportunity to win the game several times, but costly serving errors kept the Colonels from securing the victory. Katie McGurk was the lonely standout for Wilkes, connecting on .500 percent of her attacks and no errors.
In the second game Wilkes fell behind early and was able to rally back, but never overtake the Devils who had 13 kills in the set. Wilkes would only record seven kills as well as seven errors, eventually falling, 21-25.
The third game was more of a success for the Lady Colonels as they led the entire way, holding FDU-Florham to a .062 hitting percentage and killing 14 balls. McGurk once again led the Colonels with four kills and only one error, while setter
LeeAnn Searfoss (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) dished out 10 assists, helping Wilkes win, 25-20.
The fourth and final game saw Wilkes get down early and never make a big enough run to come back. The Lady Colonels had eight kills and eight errors, while the Devils recorded 12 kills.
Marissa Harrison (Shavertown/Lake-Lehman) had five kills for Wilkes, while Searfoss added seven assists.
Overall Wilkes was led by Harrison with a double-double, 12 kills and 18 digs, while McGurk had eight kills with only one error and an attack percentage of .304. Searfoss had 29 assists in the match and
Allison Kelleher (Sayre, Pa./Athens Area) had 27 digs to lead both teams.
With the loss the Lady Colonels fall to 9-2 on the season and will look to recover against McDaniel in Allentown, Pa. That match will begin Saturday, Sept. 19 at 2:00 pm.
