LADY COLONELS START SLOW, FINISH STRONG IN WIN OVER LYCOMING

Marissa Harrison (Shavertown/Lake-Lehman) recorded 22 kills while Julie Page (New Milford, Pa./Blue Ridge) added 11 to pace Wilkes to a 3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-11, 25-16) win over Lycoming in the 2009 season opener. Both Harrison and Page tallied double-doubles with 11 and 10 digs respectively.

Wilkes (1-0) struggled in the first game where they had nine of the 16 total errors in the match. Despite picking up 12 kills to Lycoming's seven, nine attack errors and four service errors led to the early setback.

The second game saw the Lady Colonels collect 16 kills, including eight from Harrison with just three errors in 34 total attacks. Harrison finished the match with a .422 attack percentage, committing just three errors in 45 attempts. Page was nearly as efficient, hitting .391 for the match with just two kills on 23 attempts.

Wilkes put together its best performance in game three where the Lady Colonels tallied 12 kills with just one error in 25 total attacks. Page and Harrison picked up four kills each, while Emily DeBuck (Pine Island, NY/Warwick Valley), who finished with eight total kills, had three in the third game. In game four, the Lady Colonels nearly matched their showing with 16 kills on 38 attempts with just three errors.

As a team, Wilkes had 56 kills with just 16 errors in 137 attacks for a percentage of .292. Katie McGurk had eight kills while Meaghan Williams (Hamlin/Western Wayne) had six. Libero Allison Kelleher (Sayre, Pa./Athens Area) led the way defensively with 17 digs while setter LeeAnn Searfoss (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) picked up 46 assists and had a block assist.

The Lady Colonels will be back in action Friday and Saturday when they compete in the King's College Invitational. They will take on Misericordia at 4 p.m. Friday followed by a 6 p.m. match against Marywood. On Saturday, they will face Mount Saint Mary's at 10 a.m. followed by a 2 p.m. date with King's.
