NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Wilkes University softball team pounded out 33 hits, but split a pair of games with Peace, falling in a slugfest 13-10 in the first game before winning the second 7-5.

Senior Gina Stefanelli (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) went 4-for-8 on the day with three runs scored and a run batted in, while freshman Megan Gershey (Lake Ariel, Pa./Western Wayne) was 4-for-5 in the first game while scoring two runs. Freshman Jackie Follweiler (Slatington/Northern Lehigh) was equally as impressive as she picked up three hits, including a two-run homer to center in the first game. She would finish with three RBI on the day.

In the first game, Peace opened with two runs in the bottom of the first inning despite failing to pick up a hit, but the Lady Colonels cut the lead in half in the top of the second. Wilkes would explode for four runs in the top of the third, giving it a 5-2 lead, but Pace bounced back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the third. Two more runs in the top of the fourth gave Wilkes a 7-4 advantage, but Peace exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. It would tack on another run in the bottom of the fifth for a 13-7 lead.

The Lady Colonels would go scoreless over the next two innings, but three runs in the top of the seventh kept the game close. Gershey led off the frame with a double to left center before Follweiler singled to left center moving Gershey to third. Rachel Miller (Wyoming, Pa./Holy Redeemer) reached on an error, which allowed Gershey to score. Cori Saltzer (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) kept the rally alive with a single to left plating Follweiler before Abbey Agresti (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) double to left center to score Miller. A ground out and a strike out would end the threat for the Lady Colonels.

In the second game, Wilkes scored all seven runs in the bottom of the third inning and collected 10 of its 13 hits in the game in that frame. The Lady Colonels picked up three-straight hits, including a two-run double by Amanda Holston (Frankford, DE/Sussex Central) scoring Lindsay Behrenshausen (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) and Kayla Kinney (Hazleton/Hazleton Area). Behrenshausen, Kinney and Holston all picked up two hits in the inning. Seven more hits, including another double and five runs later, the Lady Colonels had a seven run advantage and never looked back.

Peace kept the game interesting with a big inning of its own, scoring five runs in the top of the fifth on just two hits without a Wilkes error.

Behrenshausen got the job done both at the plate and in the circle as she scattered five hits while striking out four.
